In traditional African worldview life is a cycle of birth, death and rebirth, meaning spirit never dies, just as physics teaches us that energy is never destroyed only transformed.
The ancestors are no longer present in the physical but still can communicate and act as spiritual guardians to their descendants.
Communication takes place in various ways (including dreams, visions, synchronicities, nature, signs, sounds, etc). This is why ancestor reverence is held in high esteem, as it is known that by calling on these energies and maintaining a relationship with them they can act as spiritual guardians to assist their descendants and communities.
The philosophy is to live a life of good character and eventually transition (die) as an ancestor (highly respected elder).
